While taking in the Roberto Cavalli Fall 2011 show at Milan Fashion Week, singer Kelly Rowland dressed her eyes in neutral tones with a pop of burgundy. This gorgeous eye look can be worked with virtually any lip and cheek combo and can easily go from the office (skip the burgundy) to happy hour (add the burgundy). Here’s how to get the look:
1. First be sure your brows are properly groomed. Eye makeup looks best when your eyes are framed by a great set of brows. Then take an eyeshadow base like MAC Paint in a shade close to your skin tone. An eyeshadow base will help to prolong the life of your shadow and prevent creasing.
2. Apply a muted gold shadow like MAC Gorgeous Gold on the lid and into the crease using a blending brush like MAC #224. Use a back and forth windshield wiper movement to blend. Then using a flat defining brush like MAC #252, apply a burgundy shadow like MAC Trax or Sketch in the crease. Follow the natural curve of the crease or if you don’t have a crease, create a semi-arc shape. Blend with your blending brush. Apply a matte eyeshadow (or cream concealer) 2-3 shades lighter than your skin tone on your brow bone area to define and highlight.
Line the eyes with a black pencil like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil in Zero.
If your brows can use some extra help, gently apply a brow pencil in the sparse area. Use gentle strokes to create hair-like lines. Blend it in with a spooly or a clean mascara wand. See How to Shape and Care for Your Eyebrows for more info.
Apply 2-3 coats of mascara. Optionally, apply a pair of MAC #34 Lashes for extra effect. See How to Get Big, Flirty Lashes.
To get Kelly’s pop of color under her eyes, use a liner brush like MAC #266 and apply a bit of the burgundy shade to the lower lash line and dot the gold shadow in the inner corners of the eyes. Clean up any fallout or errors with a wet Q-tip.
